If you like your mockbusters literally swimming in cheese, and God knows I do (generally Velveeta), then might I recommend the latest made-for-the-SyFy channel movie, Battle Of Los Angeles? Now you’re probably asking, “Don’t you mean Battle: Los Angeles, that big budget, Hollywood blockbuster that opened at number one last weekend?” Absolutely not, my mainstream-movie-going sheep person. I mean Battle Of Los Angeles, the latest and greatest mockbuster from The Asylum featuring former Nickelodeon child actor, Kel Mitchell, the other half of Keenan and Kel. Written and directed by Mark Atkins, this movie kicked some ass as it premiered on SyFy a couple of weekends ago and drew an unprecedented 2.18 million viewers.
It’s easily one of the best action films The Asylum has ever produced and I was particularly impressed by Nia Peeples, who not only looks smoking hot in her tight blue jumpsuit but can actually take down an alien spaceship by stabbing it with her samurai sword!! Indeed some awesome and cheesy fun! The only thing that would have made it better would have been, perhaps, a bit more humor added to the dialogue. I personally would have loved to hear Kel say, “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger. Can I take your order?” but alas, it was just not meant to be. Probably would have been a tough fit, given the subject matter.
Battle Of Los Angeles is available on dvd from The Asylum now. Check it out for a night filled with the sort of guilty pleasure only a SyFy/Asylum movie can deliver.
